Effective Ways to Get Rid of Carpenter Ants
- Look for frass
Before you getting rid of these ants, you need to make sure that it is the real ants, not other kinds of termites. Carpenter ants have massive size, and they are dark brown or black. These insects have three body parts and six legs. The essential part is their bent antennae. The reproductive ants have the wing. Meanwhile, the worker’s ones are wingless. Finding their nest is quite easy.
You can look for frass which is a dust-like material that the ants left behind whenever they eat the wood to create their nest. The frass looks like a pile of wood shavings, but the light one. If you see frass around your home, it may be the sig of their infestation.
- Look for wood damage
Wood is the carpenter ant’s target. The ant will create nest there. When you see frass around your home, you will likely find its nest too. These ants like to nest in structural wood, cabinets, walls, beams, and hollow doors. Look for those areas and any other area where the wood is quite damp. After they take the bait, you need to follow them back to their nest. In this process, you need to watch them carefully since they might crawl into a door, a cabinet, or space in the wall. Once you find the nest, you have to get rid of them immediately. If the nest is difficult to reach and hidden, maybe you want to use the toxic bait and kill the ants. However, the bait will affect them after three days.

- Use the toxic bait
This way is the best way to choose when you want to eliminate their hidden or inaccessible nest. When they take the toxic bait, and they go back to the nest, they will also carry the toxic. Within three days, they will die. You can find carpenter ant toxic gel bait and use it by mixing with a small portion of milk or sugar. Set the bait near their nest.
- Use the dust
The second way is to use the direct dusting. This way is also effective when the nest is accessible. Once you kill the queen, the entire colony will also die. If you don’t want to use dust since it contains chemicals, you can use diatomaceous earth.
