What do termites look like and how big are termites depends on its types. Termites are categorized into four types: drywood, damp wood, subterranean, and Formosan. However, both kings and queens normally larger than normal sizes, able to reach more than 1 inch in length.
Termite’s colonies are divided into three: the swarmers, workers, and soldiers. Mostly, the workers have pale-colored and soft bodies almost similar like ants. Then, what makes termites different from white ants?
Termites are different from white ants. Termites commonly have straight antennae, shorter legs, and thick waist. Some termites have wings, mostly swarmers, and it will have the same length. - Dampwood Termites
Dampwood termites commonly have a larger size than other types of termites. Dampwood termites normally like to live in moisture areas like damp, dead wood, or leaking pipes. This one does not have workers. Termites who will do all the jobs here is the younger ones. Dampwood termites are about 0.5” to 0.62″ in size. They tend to have the oval, long, and narrow body shape. Moreover, damp wood normally has the brownish color.
- Drywood Termites
Just like its name, drywood normally live in dry wooden construction whit no soil contact. Drywood termites also do not own workers. They will ask the younger termites to do the whole jobs. For its looks, dry wood has oval, long, and narrow body shape just like the damp wood. Their body sizes are normally 0.8”, and this one has light-brown color.
- Formosan Termites
Formosan termites become the most destructive and dangerous types of termites. Even, this type has a lot of thousand termites in one colony. If all Formosan types are united, there would be up to 300 ft long line of termites. That is why you need to be careful of this one. What do termites look like in Formosan type? For its size, they normally are about 0.5 inches. They have yellowish brown color and own common termites body shape which is oval, long, and narrow. Formosan can be found anywhere, include inside walls, boat, and other building constructions.
- Subterranean Termites
The last type of termites is subterranean. This one prefers to live in wet areas with soil contact. They are about 0.12 to 1 inch in size. They also have standard termite’s body shape which is oval, long and narrow. However, they tend to get creamy brown color.
